It is a YF-17, that was the F/A-18 prototype. This was a weapons deployment test. the TA-4 Skyhawk...was just filming it.

The test was on the Bomb Rack and not the bomb. Jettison tests to make sure bombs clear the airframe upon release.

Turbulance and vapour wash is thought to be the cause of this accident.

There is also speculation that the A-4 had misunderstood mission commands and was positioned wrong.

the A4 (small plane) is below and to the left of the F-18. During a weapons test, the jettisoned item kites to the left, and smacks the A4 - you know the rest. Pilot of A4 ejected, but only after a very scary ride.
