I don't think the heat had anything to do with the failure of the wings. That plane was almost 50 years old. Metal fatigue cracks develop over time in areas of the plane that are flexed over and over. In this case the cracks just gave way when the plane was pulling out of a shallow dive.

That plane crashed in Walker, California on June 17th, 2002. My sons and best friend were there vacationing at the time we had formerly lived in Walker. It was a big fire and shut down Highway 395 from Topaz, California to Bridgeport, California. The plane crash also delayed the fighting of the forest fire as they had to try and determine the cause of the crash. Some thought that it was caused by an updraft created by the fire which caused too much stress on the wings.

That's the stuff of nightmares.

Most people survive the 'crash' part of a plane crash (Not these guys obviously) but because their legs are usually crushed on impact they can't move and burn to death.
