You saw the training of the SWAT...but here the assault was on a rush. The terrorist were in contact with negociators, but then they shot at the guys in the control tower from the cockpit and so the GIGN feared they started to kill hostages (what they planed to do...they were up to crash the plane in the Tour Eiffel...like they did the 9/11). The assault was fast to prevent a massive hostage killing.
Then they also used a sniper team that we do not see here, but the sniper shot a terrorist in the cockpit before he killed the pilot. 400 rounds were shot both side, cause it was a close range assault, with no clear visibility at the end. The GIGN guys shot in the cockpit even after the 2 terrorists in it were shot dead, cause they actually didn't have any confirmation they were both dead.
I usually don't have a lot of nice things to say about zee french, but that was allright. they ought to have a fuckin show broadcast worldwide where captured islamic terrorists get hunted down with shotguns and blown to bits. take all those gitmo asswipes for a start. then bury them in pig skin to make sure they dont go to paradise.

There's a misunderstanding. The guys burning the cars are no more than just kids and teenagers that first : want to have the name of their town cited in the tv news (and cited twice more than another town...so the competition between all of them), Second : a band of desperate guys that can't stand to be considered as second zone citizens.
This were not religion or foreign politics related riots. This is a kind of stupid tradition in some poors neighboorhood. And they all are in competition.
Plus some days ago GIGN and Fench police had arrested a bunch of terrorist which was involved wiht Iraq insurgents. Furthermore, the new threats of Al Qaida were pointed toward France. French anti terrorims police is fairly active since 1995, and they made some big arrestations.

The GIGN did an almost perfedt job except for one thing :
The staircase unit was set too high ! If you look closely you 'll see that they had to back up the staircase before opening the airplane front door. This happened because between the time when GIGN was rehearsing the assault and when they went into real action, the terrorist demanded the plane to be refuelled. Being heavier, the front door of the air plane was slightly lower then expected.
They still managed to do the job right and send ze terrorsits where they belong

The terrorists had planned to crash the air plane onto Paris.
The French Minister at that time, Charles PASQUA, figured this out and found a way to force the plane to land in Marseille. He would have ordered the plane to be shot down if the terrorsits were getting close to Paris.
