jqp364: I'm still debating the issue of drug legalization in my own mind, but some counterpoints to what you said... Legalizing drugs tends to greatly increase its use. During prohibition, alcohol use went down, and once it was repealed, it went up again. Letting people do what they want with their bodies is a decent argument, however we all have to pay for the strain they put on the medical system when they OD, cause accidents, seek treatment, etc, and/or don't have ANY medical coverage? Or what about lost productivity due to the drugs taking such a toll on their lives that they stop working and just exist? They may still commit crimes because they can't keep a steady job.

I'm not saying I have the answer on this issue, but these are some serious consequences to consider.

Interesting thing about alcohol prohibition was alcohol abuse INCREASED during prohibition and DECREASED after it ended, especially among children. Do you think Al Capone would not sell a few barrels of beer knowing kids are going to use it? But I bet you most bar owners with a legitimate permit won't risk losing it by selling it to kids. Also, if you want kids to do something tell them NOT to do it and make it as appealing as possible, romanticize its outlaw nature and make it extremely profitable. Ask any inner city kid who gets more respect (and makes a LOT more money), the rich drug dealing gangster or the guy who scrapes together a living battling stick up men and what not at the corner liquor store. Adults really aren't a whole lot different. Outlawing something that is used in abundance only makes outlaws out of the users and a resentment to the laws, law enforcers and society as a whole. Especially when the CIA routinely deals in drugs to finance covert operations. It's a little like telling your kids "do as I say not as I do". You get no respect for you, your rules, your lying, hypocritical personality. The prohibition on drugs is a bad joke but it continues to exist because people buy into the fear mongering and hysteria. legalizing drugs would have huge benefits, it would stop all other countries from profiting off our drug use. It would make drugs safer, a more consistant quality. It would stop the flow of drug users that flood our prisons, Gangbangers would'nt have a reason to have drug wars. High speed chases would go way down as would robberies. People that try drugs are going to try drugs legal or not. There would be a slight increase in drug use but drug users could be monitored and counciled on drug use. The Mom and Pop drug industries that fed the government drug trade could be monitored and taxed. Look at what the legal drug manufactures are doing. If you have the money and the doctor you can get any drug you want. Damn, I have restless leg syndrome, GIVE ME SOME DRUGS.
