The same principle should be used with terrorists. If they believe they will go to whatever heaven their faith promotes, because they suicide-bombed some innocent people: Policy should be made that their remains will deliberately be desecrated (burying with a pound of b bacon comes to mind, for a certain religion), so that their soul will NOT go to that heaven. I just hate it, when people judge someone on their looks or confidence. You have to realise not everyone is born "confident" or "open" and by staring and pointing you're not helping. The point is, some people struggle with depression, some are born with it apparently. That's only 1 reason that makes them quiet and held back. When bullying them around or making fun of him instead of being nice to them (like you should be to everyone IMO) you are further sending his mental progress back, in other words he'll eventually snap with rage, and rage is the most dangerous thing one can possess. Granted, this kid was fucked up, probably before he even got here. I heard reports on where he stalked multiple girls on campus, and that he openly admitted to his roommates about having an imaginary girlfriend named "Spanky" (I shit you not). So he was clearly missing a few bricks from his building. This guy was definitely not stable, and regretfully innocents had to die. My condolences to everyone affected by this awful awful tragedy.

Who decides? I guess you do ultimately. The public should demand it to their government. It's a bit like a law coming in banning smoking from certain public places people do accept it after a while. A few years ago there would have been an outrage.
Just to give you a different perspective:
To own a gun in this country you must not have had any past mental problems, have no previous conviction (at all - even for shop lifting or minor drug offenses). You have to have annual police inspections showing the gun to be kept in a locked strong cabinet with the firing mech kept elsewhere and then the gun must be a shotgun for sport or a rifle. No handguns, no semi's glocks uzis etc.
We do have criminals with hand guns but as they are caught the guns are destroyed plus a hefty sentence to to culprit. You'll always have this problem.
What we don't have is anybody with psychiatric problems armed to the teeth.
America a great country, but you really should step back and take a look sometimes.
i know this guys pain and what he went through i know because i have gone through the same thing i to almost have gone of the deep end but seeked help before i did it sucks that it happened the way it did but there was no stoping this kid he did what he wanted to do and nothing was going to stop him. i am not giving him prase but only sayin that he was on a mission and he completed that it just sucks that no one seen this coming or was there for him when he really needed it.
Okay, I just wanted to weigh in here. For anyone who may hold some sympathy for this guy, and try to rationalize his actions by saying someone should have tried to "reach out" to him, that should stop now. On a consistent basis, help was offered to him, he was given help, and his roommates from the previous two years (2 roomies and 5 suitemates) all have stated how over and over again they tried to reach out to him. They would offer good mornings, try to begin conversations, took him out to parties, and generally tried to befriend him in every imaginable way possible, however, each and every time they were rebuffed. He would never reply, at the most he would grunt in acknowledgment, or just simply ignore you as if there was no one else in the room, even if you happened to be sitting right next to him. So for any of you out there who believe that he was just in his actions due to a "poor me" syndrome, don't fool yourself with that thought pattern for one minute, he was offered a hand by everyone he knew here at the university, he just blatantly and openly refused to accept it. I sincerely believe, just as one criminal profiler stated, that the seed for these actions was planted long ago in his childhood somewhere, possibly by repeated and constant sexual abuse by a family member. Either way, being here and experiencing this firsthand and having to look at the tear stained faces of all of those at the makeshift memorials here on the Drill Field on campus, even psychological trauma such as that doesn't excuse this in my book. I'm sorry, seeing what has happened here and knowing someone who was lost, it just simply doesn't justify this for me, nothing ever will, I don't care what kind of explanation is attempted. But just don't fool yourself with trying to believe such things with statements like: "For all you fucks with your "like omg hes sooo weird" those bullets were for people like you.".... This young man was repeatedly reached out to by many people over his life that he met, especially so here at Virginia Tech. If his voluntary psychological treatment didn't even help the situation, I am fairly certain nothing would have; this was just simply unavoidable. But make no mistake about it, NO ONE deserved this, no matter what state of mind he was in; he was offered help, and in his self-pity and woe-is-me mindset, he decided it would be better to refuse such help as to enable his mindset and further his own thought processes that he must have been somehow "deserving" of this hatred of the world that he had.... again, even though he was reached out to over, and over, and OVER again.
Okay, my rant is done. After reading some messages here in this thread, I had to comment, I've been pacifistic up to this point, and only made statements wishing for continued support and prayers for all of us here. But in this situation, I just had to speak out. Thanks.

Though, Cho here was unsaveable because he really was insane, I've seen interviews with his roommates where they said that they regularly invited him, but he declined, so I he really was fucked up. But there are others out there who just wish they could be invited.

What I would like to say is, *IF* we accept that all those stories are true (and I believe that they are often exaggerated, but if...), then what are the citizens of the U.S. to do? Should we then surrender our arms to the government, and hope the problem will go away, or should we demand to keep our arms to protect ourselves from all those violent criminals?
The actual facts about our situation in this country do not support the first option. Over time our politicians have become corrupt, many of them interested more in personal power than representing their constituents. For example, in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, the police chief (now mayor) of New Orleans ordered a squad of police to confiscate legally-owned firearms from law-abiding citizens, at precisely that time when citizens needed them most, to protect themselves from looters and others. Then, the officials responsible denied for months that the confiscation even happened. And even when they were later caught in the lie, not much happened and a great many people have still not gotten their firearms back... even though the confiscation was clearly illegal, very unethical (given the circumstances) and clearly un-Constitutional.
Second, given the irresponsible and exaggerated news coverage of crime here in the U.S., even our own citizens tend not to believe this: The actual crime rate here has gone way DOWN over the last 20 years or so, *especially* violent and property crimes. The Department of Justice's own statistics clearly show as much, and are freely available on the Internet. Also, the DOJ is basically the head branch of law-enforcement here in the U.S., so if they have a bureaucratic axe to grind, it would definitely be in their favor to over-state the crime figures, not under-state them. Yet their figures clearly show a drop in crime that is not just significant, but actually dramatic. This has NOT been reflected (or even mentioned) by our sensationalist news media.
Third... all this has been going on while private ownership of guns in the U.S. has been going UP significantly! Since the 1980s, more states have passed "right to carry" laws for concealed weapons than ever before, and citizens have been taking advantage of those laws in unprecedented numbers. More citizens are carrying not just weapons, but *concealed* firearms... but again, crime is NOT going up, it is going down. Way down.
So... what works for England or some other nation might not work here in the U.S. And according to the figures, it is also not working in Australia. But we in the U.S. *are* addressing our own problem, in our own way, and despite the news, it is working. Quite well, thank you.

I guess if people tried, than what more could they have done? Obviously, he was just too messed up, and already hit his breaking point, and there was no turning back. And our people tend to be extremely warm and courteous - Canadians, Australians, Kiwis, and many Europeans. Your effort to drill this "fact" into people's heads stems from the fact that the only singular, "unique" advantage is your strong military which affords many countries protection. But many people believe that to live in a great country (such as Canada,) you must work hard to establish such a society. Frankly, I'm tired of other countries crying out for foreign aid. Hell, aside from the fact that your military IS strong, Americans, along with other similar folk, are strong-willed. They wouldn't step down and whine about other countries not running to wipe their asses. Others should take note. Western culture didn't fall from the skies.

1.in canada they already have laws tha make it a crime to even say that you think that homosexuality is wrong, pastors have been thrown in jail for merely saying that they disagree with homosexuality, or reading a passage that condems it.
2. in canada they are very close to passing Sharia law, a muslim law that allows men to stone a women to death for comminting adultry, while i believe that cheating on your husband would be wrong, stoning someone to death for it is unacceptable. Also in sharia law, a women must have at least four witnesses of her being raped, or she is convicted of adultry and stoned to death.. now let's think about it, would you go and rape a women with four other people aroind? Also in the sharia law, if someone steals, there hand or foot is chopped of, while some of us might like to see that happen to some dumbass theives, that is going to far. I will acknowledge that Isreal isn't perfect either, but equating the atrocities of Isreal to that of Palestines is just ludicrous. Hamas's charter calls for the destruction of Isreal. THEIR CHARTER. It's sad that countries in this day and age can even pull that off.

Bro, WHY cant (suck at html)you compare those atrocities? Palestinians have lost WAY more people than the Israeli's. They get owned, and humiliated every day. Ariel Sharon's watch both in the IDF and in Office was one of the worst things that could happen to the State of Israel and more importantly the Palestinians because his play calling resulted in fierce retaliation by the Palestinians. I would be more than happy to discuss this in a thread. I dont want to take any attention from the issue of this video. He chose our school to escape from this bullying, and to find people to fit in with, yet, when others reached out to him and tried to accept him into their circle and bring him out into college life, he still refused. They offered him chances to join campus life, but still, he refused, although he finally found what he was trying to escape. I simply don't understand it. That is why still, I have no sympathy for him, just as I know you don't share sympathy for him as well. In my time here at VT, due to my degree which I will be graduating with soon, I have learned much about Asian Religions and Cultures. I know his family has been shamed into hiding due to his actions, and the shame he has brought upon their name. His own aunt is even interviewed in clips you can readily see on TV now calling him an "idiot". I only hope, however, that even though this man was South Korean, there is no anti-Asian sentiment that grows from this. We don't need any more violence stemming from this incident, we do not need to hate upon his people or his family, this was his decision, and the blame only needs to be placed upon him.
