This clip was really chopped up. They cut out a lot of the good parts... and the ending, which was educational. I saw the whole thing about a year ago.

This councilman disagreed with some of the others, but the Mayor -- the older woman at the end of the room -- would not even let him speak. He got pissed (just as I would have), and demanded his turn to speak. The mayor told him to shut up or get out. He refused. (If this is like most City Councils, the charter gives him a right to speak about the issue.)

As you saw, the mayor had him ejected.

The end of the video was not shown here. He sued both the mayor and the police, and he won big time. They simply did not have the right to do what they did. (The Mayor did not have a right to keep him from speaking on the issue, and the police did not have legal authority to throw him out of his own council meeting!) He was awarded compensation and punitive damages.

They don't fuck with him anymore.

He had a right to be where he was, and speaking. The police in this case were just plain WRONG. The court made that point quite clear, as you would have seen if this video were whole. If anybody wants to find the whole thing somewhere else on the Internet, please do. I did not find it but I only searched for a couple of minutes.

NO, it is NOT always the proper thing to "just do whatever the police tell you to do." The police are not God, and their rights (or, more properly, privileges) are quite limited. And when they do overstep their bounds, it is not just the right of citizens, but our DUTY, to put them in their places.

That is what America is all about. And this guy showed them that they had better watch their asses next time. The policeman's fund came up pretty short that year. And the Mayor probably had to sell her house to pay the court judgment.

The police don't have unlimited privileges, and often they are wrong with their actions. But, if a cop tells me to do something, right or wrong, I'm going to agree to do it, because I don't want my head smashed in, and I don't want to spend a minute in jail. Glad this guy won in court, though.

The cops might have been wrong but he could have saved himself a lot of grief and just left and argued it in court. The outcome probably would have been the same. Just my thoughts..

I agree with this guy getting something for his trouble if what jqp says is true. However, suing the police force just hurts the community, PLUS the cop wasn't in the wrong. He was doing his job, the mayor was in the wrong. He's not a lawyer and probably doesn't know the rules of free speech in such an environment.

I hate it when people sue publicly funded groups. You are just stealing from the tax payers; your friends and neighbors.

I repeat: In my community, the police in recent years have done some very bad things, causing the deaths of innocent people. Maybe you live in a nicy-nice community where the police always do the right thing, but I do not. And I resent the hell out of this "do whatever the police tell you to do" attitude. I don't want to end up dead like those others. Or have friends and family end up dead... because they did "what the police told them" to do.

When the police are wrong, it is your DUTY to call them on it. Only that will keep them from abusing their privileges.
