I'm pretty sure you instantly fail your driver's test if you drive straight into the fucking building.

If they're not going to allow euthanasia then they should at least take their licenses away at a certain age.

Jesus, I'm surprised no-one was crushed to death. Why the heck would they let an 80-year old take a driving test anyway??

I don't think we should panic and just say no "old" people can drive. Insurance companies know teenagers are the worst offenders, so lets say you can't drive until you're 21. I am thinking about Jay Leno, and Carol Shelby. You want to tell them they can't drive? Balderdash! I say have them pass a driving test every two years. Just because you are old doesn't mean you're an idiot. My middle aged driver hit the gas and reverse pedal and knocked me down. He didn't lose is license, but I got a nice settlement.

@tree arge, yes, I think driving in this manner would constitute a test failure in most countries, though I suspect in France or Italy it would be regarded as a relatively minor misdemeanour and no hindrance to driving.

This is why senior fuckin citizens should be tested every year or just plain shot in the head when they get older than the national speed limit. Their are plenty of busses and trains and senior transport programs around so that they can all die in the same wreck

Old people (over 65) should be made to take assessments every couple of years to check if they ARE safe to drive.

So many accidents are caused indirectly by old people who cruise along at unecessarily slow speeds for road conditions. People trapped behind them get pissed off and overtake....and accidents happen.

Why do they need to drive so slow? Is it because they can't see well enough, or because they know they are unable to react quickly? Whichever way, most of them are more of a liablility than young drivers.

Young drivers are only called the highest risk by insurance companies because they know a lot of young people will be willing to pay the high premiums, where as oldies who usually just drive to the store or church wouldn't be willing to pay the premiums.

Seriously, I would say the majority of bad drivers I see on the road are elderly.....or asian..........or a woman (jk, sorta).

I got in the car with my grandma the other day for the first time in like forever and it was absolutely brutal!!!! She should not have her license, but I didn't have the heart to tell her that.

Anyone who says that old people should be shot or euthanized are probably just young punks. Let's hope Karma doesn't bite you in the ass to make sure you don't make it to that age. Don't forget that it was the "old" people who fought in wars so your asses would be free to say what you want. icon_evil.gif

Poor people don't have a license or insurance. They pay no fines when they have accidents and don't worry about insurance. Go ahead and sue, you won't get a dime.

This kind of shit pisses me off. I came home one day to a message on my answering machine from the Pueblo County Sheriff's Dept. telling me that my 82-year-old Grandma was entering I-25 THE WRONG WAY!! I told her that I didn't want her to drive anymore. She felt bad, so I explained. "Driving is best left to people between the ages of 16 and 60. Before or after that, a person does not posses the skill or reaction to operate a potentially lethal machine." She gave up her licence, Thank God.

You twits are confusing age with senility. I knew a 70yr old that had the mind and reflexes of someone much, much, much younger. Take away their license at 60? I hope you live to 60 and then you'll see, you don't automatically go into the "senile" zone. Testing every couple of years to base a license on skill is much better than some fucking knee jerk reaction to someone turning 65 or 70. Hell, I don't think you should have to wait till 21 to drink. If you can show a certain level of maturity and good grades then you should be able to drink from at least age 18.

About Jay Leno, I meant that he will be up in years here pretty soon. I doubt he'll stop driving in two years icon_rolleyes.gif

There's no way a state legislature would make laws limiting the age of their elderly drivers, because most legislatures are run by the same old farts that almost kill the rest of us on the road every day. They're not stupid enough to make any laws that would take away their licenses and as long as they're in power, we'll just have to put up with these old fogies on our travels.

I think saying that someone is a bad driver due to their age is an irrational generalization. However, as common sense and studies show, senses and reaction times deteriorate over time.

Now, "old" is loosely defined, as it should be. I believe someone is "old" when their senses and reaction times start to fade to a specific point. Saying someone is too "old" to drive is another story.

Since senses and reaction time fade over time, I believe anyone over age 65 (my personal "old" average) should be tested at timely intervals. The fields being tested should be eye sight, reaction time, psychological/cognitive, knowledge (signs, general driving law, ect.), and so on.

As for younger drivers, I believe what someone said before was true. Younger drivers are willing to pay more because we have to go to school, our jobs, and we like to just hang out and drive around randomly. Whereas people that are a little more aged don't necessarily go out as much. At level 25+ most people are just driving to stores within range and work. Younger drivers (16-20ish) are more tempted to drive fast, so that's also a valid argument as to why we have to pay more, especially males.

Although I know the DMV and/or insurance companies base these claims off of statistics, I still think it's some sort of age discrimination. Just because the majority of male teenagers speed does't mean they all will. I'm a good driver, in my opinion at least. I have been driving for a few years, but I have no tickets, I get my car checked up every so often, I have gotten into zero accidents, and I know more driving knowledge than most people I have spoken too. I specifically study driving methods and rules just to make sure I don't get into a car accident.

Now I am done rambling. Thank you.

Anyone over age 70 should be given a specially designed, intensive road test EVERY YEAR. Inconvenience? Nope. They're retired and have all the time in the world to stand in line at the DMV.

ANYONE can make an initial mistake but, as happens here, there seems to be one aspect that is exclusive to the elderly. Namely, the post-mistake panic involving the inability to correct that mistake... turing what ought to be a small personal embarrassment (jumping forward a couple of yards) into a public gore-fest (staying on that gas pedal until the car hits an immovable object). Fast reactions are essential in these situations to keep damage to a minimum.
A similar thing happened here a few years back. An elderly woman got on her gas pedal for whatever reason... ploughed into people waiting for a bus then (in a "panic") proceeded to wreck all the parked cars at the side of the road for over a hundred yards before a wall or truck stopped her. It was CARNAGE. I've never heard of one of these incidents being caused by other than an elderly woman. Young people.... and apparently elderly gents too... manage to find the brakes within a few yards.

Amazingly old woman does the same as all the young ones:
1.push the throttle to the floor
2.shouting let go off the wheel
3.cover your eyes with your hands
First time I witnessed a woman driver as i was 8. The dumb bitch drove into the truck on the other lane with no apparent reason. I was inside.
So i tell once again: GET THE HIGH HEELS OFF YOU ASS AND GO COOKING!
