The center actually did hike the ball to the quarterback by standing up and handing it to him over his shoulder real casual like, rather than through his legs like normal. The kids, having only limited experience with the sport, didn't know what to think.
Even the refs were probably notified of the trick play before the game, so that even they aren't caught off guard.

Our team used a play very similar to this in high school. Our players all pretended to start arguing, mid play, over positions. The other team started to laugh, then we shot the ball to the half back, and charged half way down field without anyone knowing what the hell was going on. Good times.

That's genius. Unlike Australian Rules Football and Rugby, Gridiron is a thinking players game. The play was live, the ball hiked, there was no whistle, the captain of the defense should have read that and creamed the QB. Gridiron always involves the distraction, faking the momentum. The whole offense were good actor's. Beautiful.
