you're right there were many FPS before halo with online, but none did online multiplayer as well as halo did. Halo kick started online console gaming, and made it worth buying...
simply put, there wasnt another shooter that came close to the quality of the Halo experience. granted things have changed now with games like COD4 and Gear of War. for its time you couldnt beat it.
