The guy got clubbed the second he tried to grab the cop's gun so the police officers had a good reason to use force even afterwards as he was keeping his grip on one of the officers. One reason could be why so many cops are needed because he is possibly on drugs. Suspects can sometimes act very dangerously and be very powerful under the influence of certain drugs. The other reason is that it is easier to secure the suspect the more help there is.
