Unfortunately, the crosswalk sign doesn't protect you. I always keep an eye on all the traffic when I cross the street, especially at night, because I know that pedestrians can be hard to see in the dark. Drivers are thinking mostly about other cars, not people on foot.

Damn, all because the busdriver was tired of waiting. In too much of a rush to beat the oncoming traffic. If he'd have slown down for the peds, there would have been two or more accidents. If he didn't, this would still have happened.
I guess, moral of the story is have some patience.
