The pony doesn't know the kid is harmless. The kid is about the size of a dog or coyote, approaching from behind like a predator, reaching in towards the animal... The pony gave very clear warning that it was scared and defensive, and the kid kept on coming.
The critter wasn't trying to hurt the kid. Just to ward him off. Otherwise it would've kicked with both hinds and launched Junior into the next county.
