Kids these days... I'll tell ya. Anyway, I am a security guard at a local commercial plaza. I'm not a dick, I let people hang out and stuff, kids can ride their bikes through, and so on. But when kids start disobeying rules, become negligent and reckless, and disturb the general peace, then something has to be done.
What you probably don't know is that people can be successfully sued if someone gets hurt on THEIR property. Having a security guard deter this can show the court that they tried to neutralize any conflicts created by kids/teens/whoever. If I saw a kid at my job grinding his skateboard on cars, that's vandalism right there. But if I let some kids ride their bikes and hang out, then that is fine. If I see kids standing on some poles in front of Best Buy (the poles are about 3-4 ft. high), then I'll tell them to get down. The plaza could be successfully sued if a kid were to fall off of one of those poles.
Kids need to listen to figures of authority. No, security guards aren't cops, but they're there for a reason. If your parents/teacher/doctor/ec t told you
not to do something, then you wouldn't. It should be the same with security guards.
As for the generalization that all security guards are assholes... it's not true. I'm one, I have tons of friends, and I am not a 46-year-old overweight guy, either. My perspective: If it isn't hurting anyone, then it's fine with me.
