I'll break with public sentiment and credit the guy for not shooting. The narrator called him a coward for being chased away, but the fact is it's his conscience that drove him away.
My mum is like that woman. Fortunately we don't have many guns in my country so my mum hasn't gotten herself shot yet, haha. Point a bazooka at her and she'll fight ya!
