I'm from a country where they do not use spike-strips (don't ask me why) so I was just wondering....is it a good idea to hold on to the spikestrip like this copper did? I was waiting for the rope to get caught at the car, taking this officer for a long ride/slide....that would have really made this vid btw.

I was thinking the same thing that looked like it was executed quite smoothly.The spikes were laid out kinda late but nonetheless he did a good job.

Agreed also, the officer did it very well, he didn't "nearly get smashed", thats simply what happens when you stand beside the roadway with traffic passing, stolen car or not.
