Actually, break sticks are precisely what you SHOULD use to break up a Pit Bull fight.
Oh, and the dogs have a tenacious fight drive, but are not vicious. Get in the middle of a fight between powerful dogs of other breeds and they are likely to redirect their aggression onto you. These dogs remain focussed on the dog they are fighting, which makes getting into the middle of a fight safer, but it also makes it horribly hard and frustrating to get either dog off the other, let alone both off at the same time.
I've done Pit Bull rescue within the context of general dog rescue since the earlyish 90s. I love the breed and will always own at least one (currently have three and two mixes). But they DO have issues that make them a challenge that not everyone is up to handling. The breed has a lot of creepy owners, but it also has some foolishly unrealistic ones.

For starters, neither one of these dogs are what I would consider pitbulls, at least in the US. I own 2 pitbulls, my son 1, and my sister another. they are all registered American Pitbull Terriers, through APTA.If you are an individual that loves dogs, and is willing to train and love your dog,Pitbulls are the best pet a person could have. None of our dogs have ever bitten a person, or been involved in a fight with another animal, including cats. A DOG IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT.

They needed a real break stick. I have a Pit, nicest dog in the world, but he might tango another dog. It's not uncommon in the breed, as many of you know. However, I make certain that I have my break stick whenever I take him out, because even though I walk him on a leash some people do not. And if someone's dog runs up on mine and he latches on I'll use the break stick after oh let's say about 5 or 10 minutes, or however long it takes for my Pit to break the little fuckers neck.

The best way to break up a fight, or stop a vicious dog in its tracks, is to break its nose. When they bite, they breathe through their noses, so if they can't breath through their nasal passage, they cannot hold a bite.
This is why if you own a Pit, you need to own a breakstick. You can make one, or buy one. It is rectangular in shape, and has a tapered-rounded point at one end (NO SHARP POINTS!). You turn it like a motorcycle throttle after inserting it between their upper and lower jaw, near their molars. Of course you need to have control of both dogs, unless one is a complete victim, in which case it is more important to simply get your dog off of it as soon as possible.

One's going to lose consciousness or at least the ability to be biting with the same amount of force. None of the normal methods work on pitbulls once they are locked onto a victim. You can't choke them because their neck muscles are too thick. Beating on them doesn't work, prying their jaws open only works if you're really strong. Spraying water on them won't do squat. Personally I would go for breaking the nose or poking their eyes.
