You should try transiting on the surface on the bridge of a submarine. That IS rough, but I've seen rougher. Try a Nor'Easter, or Pacific Typhoon with waves cresting 30 feet above deck on a Destroyer. Then praying that they don't find their way down the stacks, which will stall out the ship, and cause you to get broadsided.

The whole trick in rough seas like that is to build up enough speed so that you start getting air and begin jumping from one wave peak to another. With enough speed you can clear several peaks at a time. Plus it makes for a great photo op.
