I wouldn't even say it's militarily pointless. The U.S. Marines are incredibly deep in tradition, pride, and symbolism.

These guys represent discipline, dedication, teamwork, order, and many other things about the Corps. The are a public representation like the uniform, english bulldogs, the Eagle Globe and Anchor (note avi), etc.

Militarily it's a boon to recruiting, moral, reputation, and pride. It takes much more than food and water to keep these warriors going

By, [Militarily]....I mean doing this will not help you tactically on the battlefield and it won't save you whilst in a firefight. I do realise that it is discipline though. and a great form for recruitment and I also do understand the principle of distinguishment and honorable presense that it petrays and that is why I think it is great to watch. It looks awesome and they get more technical every time I see it.
