i'm asian american, my parents immigrated from vietnam, my dad was very strict and we had to speak only vietnamese at home.he was worried we'd lose our culture, anyways at school i spoke english and i guess watching tv helped with my english too, my friends always ask which i learned first or which language i think in, and to be honest i have no idea, its so hard to explain. i know that its really hard growing up asian american because of ignorance and racism, my "white friends" made fun of my eyes, and my "asian friends" called me "white wash" so growing up was so confusing, i just knew i was me, and mixed both cultures, i do feel a lil more american only because i was born here, been here all my life and totally surrounded by the american culture. i've been an A student all my life, read, and write enligh fluently, no accent when i speak, but i cannot read or write vietnamese and have an american accent went i speak, and im kinda ashamed but i know its not my fault because i live in America, where the english is the language (supposedly :) so don't get offended when i say that i fucking hate that every sign has a version in spanish next to it, and at work hispanic customers don't even try speaking english, but just start going off in spanish expecting me to understand then get annoyed and expect me to find a translator, its fucking hilarious when they get mad if i say mexican cuz either they're latins, el salvadorian,guatemalan... blah...blah the lists go on, and many more bilingual idiot drama. point is my parents didn't speak a bit of english here and in their 25 yrs here have never complained or expected signs in their own language, or expect translators waiting on them hand and feet, they also studied and got their citizenship (my dad was so cute when he passed, he came out waving a lil american flag, so proud and happy, he did fail twice before)as soon as my dad came here he got a job and went to college and graduated! if you're going to come here and want to live here at least learn the language, i respect and understand wanting to keep your culture, cuz im the perfect example here, but i do feel like im in a mexican country, this is my opinion those who don't agree dont get all pissy with hate responses

Wow, I see alot of comments from people demanding that if you come to this country learn english, and I see people that want to respect there heritage! All of my family came to this country in the early 1900's, except for my one grandmother who is Blackfoot Indian, they all learned English to an extent that made them viable to society. I can speak 2 languages fluently and can probably speak Spanish and French better than most. While Italian was spoke at home and was important to us, my parents and grandparents knew that we could not function in the country without becomming part of this country. They wanted to come to this country because of the chances they knew they could have. I only speak Spanish and French because of High School and College (although all Romance languages are not to differrent from each other). I would never ask a person to forget where they came from or who they are, at the same time you should aspire to become an American!!! While America is the "Melting Pot" of the world and we accept every one or at least try to as long as it is legally done, you have to realise that when you get here you need to be an AMERICAN, try to learn English, you don't need to be an expert, lord knows my Grand Parents wern't when they got here. But make an effort, try to speak English, I respect a person who tries and fails 10 times over the person who never tries. All that being said I still belive this is the place to be. Try and fail is better than never trying. ...................that probaly sounds like a republican statement......let the record show that I voted for Obama.
