Handguns are insanely inaccurate when used in a firefight situation. I can put 8 of 10 rounds from my XD-45 in a pattern the size of a grapefruit at 25 yards. That, however, is with no adrenaline or fear of losing my life. I've never been in a shootout so I have no real basis for comparison, but I'm guessing my aim wouldn't be nearly as good.
