Yup, this is just about the most dangerous thing you can do. The balloon was obviously too big and most likely filled with a combination of both hydrogen and oxygen (or oxyacetylene). Oxygen by itself won't do this, and hydrogen will pop (acetylene will poof black). Mixing 1 or the other with oxygen will bang. We did this in a shop class (in a garage) with a small 5" balloon and the compression blast broke a few windows. Best to cover your ears and open your mouth when you do this.
