Newer guns (if youve ever fired one) have a interior hammer that does not have a de-cocker (Springfield XD-9 XD-40 & almost all Glocks...), and as long as a round is in the chamber, the hammer is cocked. First off, like most law inforcement in the Bay area. BART police standard issue fire arm is a Sig-Sauer .40-cal semi-auto pistol. IT DOES HAVE A DECOCKER!
Like most sig arms with DA (double action), this model when firing, the trigger pull is about 8.5 lbs. If the trigger is released all the way forward, this will engage the primary trigger reset and have a trigger pull of 6.5b lbs.
Standard SIG Pros do not have a manual safety but do incorporate a decocking lever.
Either way, 6.5, 8.5 lbs on your index finger is not like flicking a fly...

My XD-45 has an official trigger pull of 5.5-7.7 pounds. I personally think it is an easy pull. I checked Sig Sauer's site and checked their specs. Hammer down is 10 pounds, cocked is 4.4. Neither is really that much in my opinion. But I will say that I tested several handguns before purchasing mine, and I could consistently fire double taps faster with a double action over a DAO every time.

The integrated safety in most DOA's is built into the trigger. Mine also has a secondary safety built into the grip. If you don't apply pressure to both simutaneously, it won't discharge. Not sure about my XD, but I'm pretty sure that a Glock has a plate that goes between the primer and the striker that disengages when the safety is depressed. This means that even if the striker malfunctions, it will hit the plate and not the cartridge thus keeping it from going off.

Most officers carry their taser holster either just in front or just to the rear of their primary weapon. Adrenaline and lack of maturity (from the looks of this baby faced kid) probably had a lot to do with it as well.

The standard issue firearm is carried in a level 3 holster. Which means you have 3 steps you have to go through to remove it. Snap,Twist,Rock. The standard stun gun does not. The officer looked young. Either he was lacking experienc to be in that situation. Or the young gentlemen got to him and maybe he lost control. I am X law enforcement not an expert but I didn't see any reason for a weapon. My first thought was maybe the taser? But I was in much more hostel situations in my time and didn't draw a weapon. You can see the young officer respond to his mistake and the senior officer step back once the weapon was out. Shrug who knows.

I'm cop and have been for 10 years. I have also been in a fatal shooting with a man who was shooting at multiple people. I'm not one to bash another officer however I can't believe what I just watched. We carry our tazers on the opposite side of our duty weapon so that there is no chance in hell that we mistake the two. Blind folded I could tell the difference between the two. We are also trained not to have our gun in our hand when we grab with the other as there is a reflex that happens when you grab with one hand the other makes a grabbing motion as well (try it some time). I feel very sorry for the young man and his family and the office's family. The officer has ruined a lot of lives including his own it would appear. Disgraceful.

It's tragic, but it's also inevitable that if you put a gun in a stress filled situation enough times something bad will eventually occur. Do you know how much time this cop has on the job? It is quite apparent that the shooting was not intentional. However, neither was it excusable, in any way that I can see. Even if it were a taser it would not have been excusable, because it is not acceptable to be tasing somone who is already on the ground, on their stomach.
Tasers were intended to be a "less lethal" weapon... and in fact they have proven to still be lethal in too many cases. They are supposed to be used "in lieu" of guns where appropriate, because they are a less lethal solution. However, some GODDAMNED STUPID police forces have begun to use them in place of any sort of physical contact or force at all, and even to get people who are already under physical control to comply, which is simply WRONG, and DANGEROUS.
I know of at least two people locally who have died as a result (directly or indirectly) of irresponsible tasing by police. All to often it is inappropriate and unacceptable in a civil society.

That is only under the "proper" conditions. If conditions become less than ideal, a taser or stungun is capable of bringing an entire chain of people to their knees (or faces), if they are in physical contact. It doesn't happen often, but it certainly can happen.

I live in the area where this incident occurred (Oakland, CA). The shooting was accidental. There is, however, a lot of questioning going on about why the officer drew his weapon in the first place -- the suspect was already handcuffed. The incident triggered a riot and a considerable amount of vandalism and violence in the area (who they think they are punishing, I have no idea). The officer who did it is named Johannes Mehserle, and he resigned abruptly today. He is 27, a two-year veteran officer.

When you carry any kind of semi-automatic handgn "cocked and locked" (the preferred and recommended form of carry for many kinds), you are trained to take the safety off as soon as the weapon leaves the holster anyway. There is little in life that is more useless than a drawn weapon with the safety on. So it doesn't matter whether it was a Glock or an XP or a Colt 1911. Once it's drawn, the safety is off.

JelatenusFlymm is also wrong. A Glock's action is, for all practical purposes, Single Action Only (SAO). It must be cocked manually before you pull the trigger for the first time. After that, of course, the recoil from firing it recocks it. It is ridiculously simple to convert a Glock's trigger to a mere 3-pound pull, which you simply can't get with a DAO. That is one reason that DAOs are usually less accurate.

Here in NY state we can't legally say we were in a car "accident" (auto collision". As this would assume no ones at fault. The thinking is that a car should never for any reason get smashed up if the operator was obeying all the driving rules.
