As someone pointed out, the M1 is light years ahead of the old Sherman M4's of WWII and besides that, the roof metal of the car shielded the tracks to an extent.

M1 tank isnt build to resist ied's. dont know what happend to the tank driver but woulnd be amazed if he had shrapnal or gear that lay under him shuffed up his ass. Tracked vehicles in general suck at resisting ied's.
