My boss went to China a couple of years ago to look at some manufacturers. He was in Shanghai and said the water in the harbor looked like it had an inch thick layer of greenish-black slime on top of it. And that it smelled worse than it looked...

When a commodity is abundant people often undervalue it's existence. When you have BILLIONS of people in your country, their value as human beings go down, making them at best, targets for discrimination and outlets for rage and at worse, extermination.
I live in California and I've noticed that Chinese people rarely say "excuse me" when they bump into you. At first I chalked it up to rudeness, then upon further introspection I figured when you come from a country where man is TOO plenty then the polite rigors of society go out the window. Can't say "excuse me" to the 10,000 or so people you bump into on your way down the block to the market.
