Officer Jason Anderson's car was racing Milford's cruiser and the speed was 94 mph.
They weren’t responding to a call. Their lights and sirens weren’t on. It was 2:15 in the morning and they were just returning back to Milford.
Anderson was suspended with pay from the Milford Police Department, arrested by State Police and charged with manslaughter. He is due in court on Nov. 24. I really don't know what you're trying to defend.

Running that speed with no emergency lights? I don't doubt that car was somewhere around 90mph. It wasn't a red light, the lights appear to have been flashing yellow. The other car was turning left which usually means they have to yield the right of way. However, the road there -- US-1 at Goldman road (from the GPS coordinates)- with so many businesses and traffic signals was probably 45mph max. From the teens' perspective, the cop car, at night with headlights glaring, far down the road the teens would have had a very hard time judging the extreme speed (for that area) and no doubt thought it was safe to turn.
Hope no one was actually hurt (hard to believe, but still hope) and hope the cop was at least sanctioned, if not fired.

This is why emergency vehicles such as police cruisers should have some sort of device outfitted on top and in front of them that really grabs other motorist's attention. Bright flashing lights or something maybe? I didn't see any in this video so I can only assume this is a new concept that could be put into use while driving really fast through intersections..

If you look at the video correctly and not follow the caption posted with this video, you will see the cop car is not running a red light. It is a flashing caution light, the other car failed to yield the right of way either way to oncoming traffic 90 mph or 50mph he/she still failed to yield. Just because you pass your license exam does not mean your smart enough to be behind the wheel.

"Yield right of way?" Even if you are correct, you shouldn't have to die and since the speed limit was FORTY MILES PER HOUR, a normal crash probably wouldn't have killed anyone. Over 90 miles an hour is often death to someone. That's an extreme speed. But at 138 feet per second, it'd be interesting to see how my Andrettis here would judge the approach speed of the other officer correctly. I doubt few can and it's a good reason they don't have crossing intersections on high speed roadways.

And when people look at oncoming traffic for a fraction of second to judge if they have time, they usually expect the approaching vehicle to be going the normal speed and based on distance gives them X amount of time to make a turn. If they are teens and/or didn't look long enough or were distracted by the non crashing squad car (I know I eyeballed all cops I spotted as a teen), it's very easy to see how they never saw or had no chance to avoid the other one if it was going that fast. The clearer version is just sickening.

Only two cruisers have video cameras and they only activate and record the last 30 seconds and up when the lights and sirens are activated. That's a few flaws in the system. It's going to cost $79K to install 7 more cameras according to the article. What a ripoff. I've put video in my car on occasion with a $35 Swann camera from Menard's and a 15 year old camcorder and it looks just as good or better at night as these overpriced dash cams.

The officers were returning from a call- not on the way to one or in any other way acting in an emergency capacity- and were thus legally bound by the same traffic laws as anyone else. The office driving the car that struck and killed the two teenagers has been ARRESTED and charged with two counts of MANSLAUGHTER. (Caps for all those who can't seem to read complete sentences...) The officer driving the car that recorded the entire incident was also speeding...

From watching the video this is what I've gathered:
The teenagers were to yield to the oncoming traffic. However, they did not. Anyone that SHOULD have passed their driver's test should take into account the speed in which oncoming traffic is coming, not just glance and hope. If the teenager driving took the time to realize this opposing car was speeding, as they should have been taught, they would be alive today.
As for the police officer: His emergency lights weren't turned on, so such speeds were unwarranted. Even when responding to a call someone should be doing 30 mph over the speed limit, MAX. And that varies on the call as well (Comparative Example: A "Sick" call to a Cardiac Arrest or Shots Fired somewhere).
It seems they both made mistakes, but this easily could have been avoided.

Actually, the flashing lights that you see on the video are RED. Which means that they were in the right to turn since flashing red. They had the right of way and the cop was running the red lights. Before posting know the facts.

The video here happened about a mile from my house. The cops were providing assistance to a neighboring town and were on their way back to their town. They were clearly screwing around and the cops are trying to blame the kids because they found pot bags in the drivers pocket and they had just come from a party. The cop was charged with manslaughter and reckless driving. He goes to court on 11/24/2009. Hopefully he goes to Prison!

I am not a cop and I am not a Laywer but regardless of a black and white video, the light was flashing which means yield (proceed with caution). The cop that hit the teens did NOT have his lights flashing (no sound to hear any sirens) which is not uncommon depending on the call they were going to. By the looks of things, the teens had no perception of speed and inexperience played a factor. Maybe the cops should have had their lights on, if so then it would clearly be the teens fault, since the cop did not have his lights flashing it could be a fifty, 50 chance as to who is at fault...
