LOL! Thank God Chopper isn't Prime Minister, come to think of it he’d make a great Trade Unionist…lol. - I guess what we are discussing, and what politicians debate and vote for, is a dialectical conflict between the power of individual choice and responsibility versus the evils of the state causing individual dependence on a socialized system. The fear is that the latter would cause individuals to stagnate, prevent individual growth or prosperity and cause an individuals character or disposition to be harmed by pampering. I have witnessed this happen. - - I have roots in the conservative political perspective, although experience has taught me a few things. I believe in personal responsibility, as you do, yet there are those who exist to whom the genetic lottery has not been so kind. I'm talking about individuals who are intellectually challenged, others with learning disabilities and mental health problems and illnesses and disease. It is easy to judge such people without giving reflection to their daily realities and the difficulties they face. Although we all have to accept the 'cards we have been dealt in life' and 'work with what we've got' these individuals do not choose their realities. - - Don’t get me wrong seeking to understand is not the same as justifying nor does it mean a person is a ‘Liberal’. I am considered a moderate liberal, but I have conservative views in which I strongly support. I'm not justifying the actions of those who want avoid working to earn money from drug dealing, or just 'hangout' with 'mates'. - - Also funding churches to help the needy is a form of socialism, a sort of privatized religious social welfare. Giving subsidies to corporations is a form of corporate socialism, socialism, to a greater or lesser extent, happens in all Governments its just some ‘models’ cause more problems than they solve. - - I have never lived in America, I can not say what America needs that would be arrogant, ignorant and plain stupidity. I can only speak of those things in which I have experienced and witnessed. My father worked all his life to own a home, car and to raise a family. He, like you, was cash poor as he was building his asset wealth. My father was a business analyst for an insurance corporation. In 1987 there was a major stock market crash. Australia lost, something like, 50% of its worth overnight. My dad lost everything but the house, then in the 90’s the company restructured, he lost his job. Then he got cancer. No medical cover. Without socialized medicare and medicine my father would be dead. Not even selling his house would have covered the expenses. - - Our welfare program works to move people off the ‘dole’ an into paid employment. The new system, along with a healthy economy has maintained low unemployment, currently 4 per cent. Of this 4% there are a lot of single parent and others who genuinely need the assistance. Sorry about the length of this!!!
